Understanding Colour

Well, well, well! A smattering of snow has settled in Sussex overnight. More a light dusting of icing sugar than the deep frosting that adorns this landscape, but we'll take what we can get.

Good morning, and Happy New Year to you all. This is the quickest of posts, for those of you that follow my video tutorials, to notify you that I have made a new one, and it's sitting there in the 'videos' page, waiting for you. Earlier last year I made a video that acted as a signpost to ten further tutorials on different aspects of technique that I consider to be essential for developing your skills as a landscape painter. Since then, we have covered two of those - equipment and tonal values - and this new tutorial looks at the topic of colour. The aim of the video is not to be too technical, but rather a broader discussion on understanding the importance of a limited palette comprising primary and earth colours and how to mix these in a way that will enhance your painting technique. It's longer than normal, so maybe stick the kettle on, make yourself a cuppa, and see if there's anything there that you can take away to help you with your own landscape paintings.

You will forgive me, I'm sure, for the obvious spelling mistake in the video's title, but it was a rather hefty upload, and the thought of editing it and then uploading it again was less than appealing!
